#Number6

American Family Association
I liked the idea as soon as I read about it. While gun controls are debated, there is something we can do immediately. 

It’s #Number6—as in the Bible's sixth commandment—you shall not murder. 

The American Family Association has a campaign asking families and concerned citizens to have schools declare on their marquees, “You shall not murder”. And keep it on the sign for one week.



This isn’t a religious statement as much as it is declaring our nation’s law. Murder is illegal.

I’ve been a part of school districts virtually my whole life—from student, to parent, to volunteer. I’ve seen the banners declaring, “Say No to drugs,”  or  “No bullying,” and “Don’t text and drive.”



You shall not murder. It’s something we understand, but in a world where life is fragile, a reminder of #Number6 is not just a moral imperative, it’s something kids need to embrace.


While American Family Association’s effort may fail to gain momentum in our schools, we can share the importance of #Number6 with those in our sphere of influence. And truly the campaign is only a short term idea that needs to be a long term effort.

Human life is a treasure and our kids can learn to value life if we teach them.

Dreaming big dreams about the future is easy for kids. The only thing standing in the way is time.  Kid’s dreams are not about skills, or opportunities, or even practicality. Those things come much later.  My grandson hopes to be professional soccer player when he grows up. Wild or Tame? Which One Are You?

Finally! Research that explains why I act the way I do. Columbia University’s Motivational Science Center studied people’s activities and what brought them the most happiness. Even more telling were how those activities changed as they aged. Twenty-somethings tend to equate happiness with high-energy activities. Words like excited and ecstatic are usually attached to spontaneous things—even risky things—and living life full throttle.  Researchers labeled this Promotion Motivation —the urge to take chances, including career moves that may not work out. Happiness comes from happenings—the more happenings, the more happiness. By age forty, adults associate happiness with things running smoothly at work and home. Homeless Winslow

A while back I found a left-behind sign at my bus stop. No doubt, it’s a “sign” of our times. Then there’s Winslow*—that’s the name I’ve given her because she’s always in downtown Winslow. As far as I know, she’s been homeless for a few years.  She has grocery carts filled with old toys, shoes, clothes, towels, games, and a wild assortment of cast-off stuff she must have collected from the town’s dumpsters. I’m not sure what she does with it all—if anything. But I’ve never seen her beg. Her nightly “home” is adjacent to the town’s post office—it’s a covered spot, so she parks her carts and pulls blankets over herself. That’s usually where I see her on cold, rainy nights. But this week, she was in the post office—the part that’s left open to the public all night. She had a toaster oven plugged in and was re-heating a foil-wrapped item that looked like something the grocery store might have given her.  I needed to mail a package, so I went to the self-serve machine and began pus
