Christmas Elves

If you haven’t had a chance to meet a Christmas elf, let me introduce you to Claudia. By day, she works tirelessly for her clients in the real estate market. But throughout the year, she is stowing away stuffed animals, puzzles, coloring books, crayons, and a plethora of children’s gifts.

Then, along with her fellow elves, she loads up brightly wrapped presents and heads for the hallways of Seattle Children’s Hospital. In a season when children are happily singing Frosty the Snowman and Jingle Bells, other lie in hospital beds waiting to get better.


Claudia and her elf team bring wagons full of toys and distribute them to very sick little girls and boys. Parents look on with smiles and an elf often hands them a coffee gift card that lets them know others care about them here.




Christmas is a tough time to be in the hospital. But cheering littles ones is what Claudia knows best. Her own niece, Sophie, spent weeks and weeks at Children’s Hospital as she recovered from a heart transplant and numerous surgeries over the course of her young life. As Sophie entered her teen years, she knew how much these gifts mattered to young patients. Thus, a delightful Christmas tradition was born.


One time a little girl ran up to Sophie’s wagon full of stuffed animals, and with tender hands she picked out a soft furry dog. The girl’s own stuffie had been lost on the medical flight that had brought her here from Alaska. Now she had a cuddly friend to be with her again. Sophie knew that many children were far from home.




Sadly, Sophie lost her battle as her precious heart gave up, but Claudia and her family honor her memory by returning each year with mounds of children’s gifts. 


When it comes to Christmas elves, Claudia is my favorite. She works tirelessly to give children a dose of joy. If Claudia’s Christmas wish could come true it would be that just one more sick child would receive a gift. This is special medicine doctors can’t provide—but is 100% effective.

Dreaming big dreams about the future is easy for kids. The only thing standing in the way is time.  Kid’s dreams are not about skills, or opportunities, or even practicality. Those things come much later.  My grandson hopes to be professional soccer player when he grows up. Wild or Tame? Which One Are You?

Finally! Research that explains why I act the way I do. Columbia University’s Motivational Science Center studied people’s activities and what brought them the most happiness. Even more telling were how those activities changed as they aged. Twenty-somethings tend to equate happiness with high-energy activities. Words like excited and ecstatic are usually attached to spontaneous things—even risky things—and living life full throttle.  Researchers labeled this Promotion Motivation —the urge to take chances, including career moves that may not work out. Happiness comes from happenings—the more happenings, the more happiness. By age forty, adults associate happiness with things running smoothly at work and home. It’s also about feeling secure in relationships. Keeping healthy matters more too. The Quiet Dad

After my granddaughter’s gymnastics, she’d always ask to go to the park next door—even in the winter. When you’re a high energy child, cold is relative. Our routine seemed to overlap with a dad and his son. I’d watch them as I watched my granddaughter go through her favorite activities—crossbar, swings, spinner, and the curly slide.  But the dad was not doing the same. He’d go hand-in-hand with his boy—pointing to trees, clouds, and the texture of the grass. I could see they were in a different place—one of sights, smells, and feels.   His son didn’t speak, so the father spoke into the silence around them.
